Carla Movia (born in 1989 in Trieste, Italy) is a contemporary jewellery maker based in Trieste. She holds a BFA (2014) and MFA (2016) in Contemporary Jewellery and Body Ornament from Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence tutored by Dutch artists Ruudt Peters and Lucy Sarneel. She is currently based in Trieste where she works as an independent jewellery maker and regularly travels to Florence where she teaches at Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School.

Artistic Mastery: The Intricate Crafts of Mixed Media and Filigree

Mixed media, filigree technique, material transformation. Both techniques are very time-consuming: when working with filigree, she melts her own metal, transforming it into wires, and then bending and soldering it in order to give it this very intricate and delicate appearance. When working with sugar, the first steps are pretty fast, although the hardening/drying time can take up to two weeks.

Are your sugar earrings affected by the climate?

No, they don't melt with warmth. They are not waterproof but a few drops of rain won't affect them.

Will your sugar earrings look different from the pictures?

Yes, each individual earring is truly unique because it is composed of sugar. The resin keeps the crystallisation and composition stable and each earring will be different from the other.
